About the Pursuits Program:

The Pursuits program is a unique, four-credit, outdoor centric, integrated leadership program designed for senior level students. Students face intellectual, social, and physical challenges to develop the strength and discipline they need to successfully adapt to a dynamic and changing world.

Pursuits leaders learn a demanding curriculum in the areas of health science, physical education and leadership. They apply problem solving, managerial and organizational skills to real-world situations while juggling the demands of leadership placements, extracurricular activities, field trips, community service, and academics.

Students experience a variety of leadership and group situations where they develop knowledge and skills in group dynamics, interpersonal relations, committee structure, event organization, and effective communication. Students face the challenges of outdoor recreational pursuits as well as fitness and nutritional training which foster a lifelong appreciation of health and well-being.

About the Event:

This unique fundraiser begins with a Silent Auction and Reception in the Galleries, followed by professional rock climber/speaker Les Timms and two adventure-based films in the Opera House. The first film, “Under an Arctic Sky”, documents the journey to the most remote corner of Iceland in the middle of winter in search of perfect surf.  A few days in, the worst storm in twenty-five years blow through and shuts down the country, turning the search for waves into a life-threatening prospect (www.underanarcticsky.com).  The second film takes place in the backwoods of British Columbia, Canada, where three small but dedicated crews of adventure seekers were quietly changing the course of a sport and carving their own paths in history.  This film is the origin story of a small movement of mountain bikers and filmmakers who rose up, challenged the status quo, and turned the sport of cycling on its head.  This is a story that has never been told, told by the people who lived it firsthand (thisisthemomentmovie.com).
